Overview of Emerging Issues for Communication Specialists in 2019

The explosion in technology and government policy affects daily life and directly impacts how business professionals communicate. Government interference in how communication specialists go about their business rubs up against the protections of the implied right of communication in the Australian Constitution. Amendments to the Copyright Act in December 2018, to change the life of copyright, brings both benefits and challenges. Regulations governing cultural sensitivity, gender and identity, and security, are expanding. New and emerging technologies, and the shift in the balance of power due to social media, raise novel legal and ethical questions.

Big Data, Analytics and the Journey from Insights to Answers

Across the globe, senior managers seek greater understanding of how to leverage their existing user data, as well as big data, to understand the customer journey more effectively and make informed business decisions. Many businesses operate on fragmented systems, with no centralised understanding of the true customer experience. It is important to identify and understand just how many touch-points a user has with your brand and how that information is captured and analysed. This presentation will deep dive into common customer touch-points, and the systems that capture them, and look at how to better collate that data in order to better understand your consumers.

Investing in your Public Value

Every member-based association has public value – that unique aspirational feature of the profession, ideal or cause your association symbolises to the community or a particular market. Strategic communication and engagement plans are essential to building your association’s reputation, relevance and revenue. Julia Evans will share three examples of how the Australian Academy of the Humanities promotes the public value of the humanities, arts and culture in Australia to the community and government; she will provide successful ideas on strategies, how to implement them and how to measure the results.

Data Security and Its Relationship with Member Engagement

In order to successfully engage with members, associations need to be able to reassure them that the data they share will be protected and used solely for the purpose for which it was given. Member trust is hard earned and easily lost, however it can lead to great mutual rewards. A breach of this trust via misuse of data destroys trust AND runs foul of the law – a double incentive to ‘get it right’. In this session, we’ll consider the carrot – members’ trust benefits both them and your association; and the stick – member disengagement, your reputation loss, and potential fines and penalties.
